Malaysians Advised To Postpone All Travels To Lebanon 12-05-2008 ~ BERNAMA
|
| KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysians have been advised to postpone all travel to Lebanon at the moment due to the highly volatile security situation in the country.
The Foreign Ministry said on Monday the situation could deteriorate without warning and lead to widespread violence.
Malaysians could be caught up in violence directed at others as the security situation remained fragile and could deteriorate rapidly, Wisma Putra said in a statement.
The Malaysian Embassy in Beirut is temporarily close since Friday due to ongoing concerns about the security situation in the vicinity of the embassy, it added.
Fightings erupted in Beirut between the government and the Hizbollah-led opposition supporters since almost a week ago, leaving over 40 people dead, according to news reports from Beirut.
Wisma Putra also urged Malaysians already in Lebanon to avoid unnecessary local travel and monitor the media for information about new security risks and threats.
Access routes to the Beirut International Airport were restricted and the airport had announced its temporary closure, the statement said.
Malaysians requiring emergency consular assistance could call the 24-hour consular emergency centre at telephone number 961-3-370902 and are advised to check with airlines regarding future flight information to and from Beirut, it added.

Malaysia Wants Asean Charter To Be A Success, Says Rais 12-05-2008 ~ BERNAMA
|
| PUTRAJAYA, May 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia wants to ensure that the Asean Charter, which gives the group a legal identity and turn it into a more effective and cohesive organisation, becomes a success, said Foreign Minister Datuk Dr Rais Yatim.
"We would like to prioritise matters pertaining to relations with Asean countries firstly, for example with Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and the other seven nations of Asean to ensure the success of the Charter.
"It is based on three pillars, namely the political and security well-being of the grouping, the economic well-being and also the social and cultural well- being," he told Bernama recently.
He said it was important as "this is where we dwell and share our future".
Rais said this when asked about Malaysia's foreign relations policy.
Asean leaders signed the historic accord last November after four decades of the group's existence.
In a nutshell, the ASEAN Charter is all about giving the grouping a stronger and collective voice on the international stage and ensuring plans endorsed by its leaders are effectively implemented according to timelines.
Some critics condemned the document as diluted to irrelevance, with one Asean member, the Philippines reportedly warning that its legislature was unlikely to ratify it.
ASEAN governments have one year to ratify the charter.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Since his appointment as the foreign minister on March 19, Rais has so far visited Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and Philippines.
The visits are part of the tradition of newly appointed Asean foreign ministers aimed at establishing rapport with their counterparts after assuming office.
