About Us
The role of the Middle East and North Africa Division (MENA), is to manage Malaysia’s bilateral relations with 25 countries in the Middle East and North African region. MENA monitors and analyses the political, economic and social developments in the region and its effects on Malaysia’s bilateral relations with countries in the region. Middle East and North Africa is fast becoming an important region to Malaysia and efforts are being made to enhance relations with countries in the region.
Malaysia maintains 17 diplomatic missions here. They are in the Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Lebanon, Algeria, Yemen, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Turkey, Syria, Bahrain and Morocco.
The relations primarily focus around trade and investment flows between Malaysia and countries in the region, as well as, substantial cooperation in education, tourism and Islamic finance and banking. There also remains much potential for bilateral cooperation in other areas including in the halal industry. Exchanges of visits at all levels to and from the region have highly benefited all facets of bilateral relations.
The Division also monitors regional issues such as situations in Iraq, Lebanon and Darfur, Sudan.
