The Developing 8 (D-8 or Developing Eight) is an arrangement for development and economic cooperation among eight countries namely Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
The establishment of the D-8 was announced officially during the Istanbul Summit of Heads of State/Government on June 15, 1997.
The objectives of the D-8 are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision making at the international level as well as improve the standards of living in member countries.
The D-8 is an arrangement with no adverse impact on bilateral and multi-lateral commitments of the member countries emanating from their membership in other international or regional organisations.
H.E. Dr. Dipo Alam from Indonesia is currently the Secretary General of the D-8 Organisation and the Secretariat is based in Istanbul, Turkey.
THE 27th SESSION OF D-8 COMMISSION
The 27th Session of the D-8 Commission will be held on the 30 and 31 October 2009 and will be chaired by H.E. Ambassador Zainol Abidin Omar; the D-8 Commissioner for Malaysia. Commissioners from all member countries are expected to attend the Session.
THE 12th SESSION OF THE D-8 COUNCIL OF MINISTERS
The 12th Session of the D-8 Council of Ministers will be held on 2 November 2009 and will be chaired by the Hon. Datuk Anifah bin Hj. Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia. It will be attended by all Foreign Ministers of the D-8 Member States.
The D-8 Council of Ministers meets once a year to exchange ideas as well as to determine the future path of the D-8 and renew resolution to strengthen economic cooperation among member countries for mutual benefits.
The Ministerial Meeting will provide an opportunity to formulate new strategies to further deepen the existing cooperation between D-8 Member States. In this regard, the Meeting is expected to embark on Phase II of the Ten-Year D-8 Cooperation Roadmap.
