Embassy of Malaysia 

to the People’s Republic of China

 

Malaysia is deeply saddened by the great lost of lives, properties and livelihoods caused by the earthquake which hit southwest China on 12th May 2008.

 

His Majesty the King of Malaysia, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Sultan Mahmud,  in a message of condolence to His Excellency President Hu Jintao expressed hope that the Government and the people of the People’s Republic of China will be able to overcome this tragedy with courage and solidarity. Messages of sympathy were also sent by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Abdullah  Badawi and Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dr. Rais Yatim to their counterparts, Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, respectively.

 

As a manifestation of Malaysia’s solidarity with the Government and people of China, the Government of Malaysia will contribute USD 1.5 million to the Government of the People’s Republic of China towards the relief of the earthquake victims. The contribution is expected to be handed to the Ambassador of China to Malaysia by the Malaysian Foreign Minister on 30th May 2008 in Kuala Lumpur.

 

Malaysia has also established a disaster fund to collect donations from the Malaysian public to help ease the burden of the victims of this calamity.

 

In addition, the Government of Malaysia has offered to send to China a 25 member rescue team, accompanied by 10 medical personnel, to assist in the relief effort.
