THE THIRD ASEAN BRUSSELS COMMITTEE (ABC) MEETING,

5 November 2009

 

The Third Meeting of the ASEAN Brussels Committee (ABC) was held at the Embassy of Malaysia on 5 November 2009, chaired by H.E. Dato’ Hussein Haniff, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Belgium concurrently accredited to Luxembourg and the European Community.

 

Among the issues discussed during the meeting includes the outcome of ABC Ambassadors’ Meeting with the Chairman of the Delegation of Southeast Asia / ASEAN at the European Parliament on 4 November 2009, the outcome of the 15th ASEAN and Related Summits as well as on several other activities that will be undertaken in November 2009.

ABC AMBASSADORS’ MEETING WITH THE SOUTHEAST ASIA / ASEAN DELEGATION AT THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT,

The ASEAN Brussels Committee (ABC) met with the Delegation of Southeast Asia / ASEAN at the European Parliament on 4 November 2009. This is the first engagement between the ABC Ambassadors with the new Members of European Parliament involved with Delegation of Southeast Asia / ASEAN, following the European Election held on 7 June 2009.

 

 

The meeting with the ABC Ambassadors was held back to back with the briefing by European Commission on the current state of EU - ASEAN relations at the European Parliament.  H.E. Dato’ Hussein Haniff as the Chairman of the ABC led the discussion between the ABC Ambassadors with the Delegation of Southeast Asia / ASEAN that was led by its Chairman, Mr. Werner Langen from Germany.

 

Discussion were focussed on ASEAN-EU relations, ASEAN Charter, ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission of Human Rights, the outcome of the 15th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits, Climate Change as well as Sustainable Development.

HEADS OF AGENCY MEETING,

2 November 2009

 

 

The second meeting of the Heads of Agency Meeting was held on 2 November 2009 at the Official Residence of the Ambassador of Malaysia. The meeting was attended by representatives by all Government Agencies responsible to the Embassy of Malaysia Belgium, except the representative from the Malaysian Timber Council.

 

The meeting has provided the opportunity for the Embassy of Malaysia to streamline and coordinate the efforts undertaken by all agencies involved in promoting Malaysia’s interests in Belgium and Luxembourg as well as the European Communities as a whole.

 

The meeting touched on updates since the last HOA Meeting which was held on 4 May 2009, current issues under respective areas of coverage Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Communities as well as future activities that will be held in Belgium and Luxembourg in 2010.

 

A lunch was hosted by the Ambassador of Malaysia at the end of the meeting. The next HOA meeting is scheduled to be held in May 2010.

The Ambassadors of the ASEAN Brussels Committee (ABC) met with H.E. Ambassador Bertrand De Crombrugghe, the ASEM Head of Task Force, at the Embassy of Malaysia in Brussels on 19 October 2009. Chaired by H.E. Dato’ Hussein Haniff as the current Chairman of the ABC, the meeting has provided an avenue for an extensive exchange of views on matters pertaining to the preparations of the ASEM VIII Summit which will be held in Brussels from 4 – 5 November 2009, particularly on the substantive aspect.

On the occasion of the 52nd National Day Celebration, the Embassy of Malaysia, Brussels, had successfully organised a National Day Reception on 10 October 2009 at Hilton Hotel Brussels.

 

 

The event was well attended by officials from the European Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belgium, Foreign diplomats, business contacts and representatives from Think-tank based in Brussels were among the guests during the reception.

AND INDUSTRY ANTWERPEN (VOKA), BELGIUM

 

 

His Excellency Ambassador Dato’ Hussein Haniff made a courtesy call on the Managing Director of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Antwerpen (VOKA), Belgium, Mr. Luc Lewel on Tuesday, 6 October 2009.  He was accompanied by Ms. Rusiah Mohamed, Trade Commissioner, MATRADE Rotterdam and Mr. Shahril Nizam Abdul Malek, First Secretary (Political) Embassy of Malaysia & Mission of Malaysia to the EC. Mr. Lewel was joined in the meeting by Ms. Jill, Suetens, Manager of the International Department of VOKA.

 

The purpose of the courtesy call is to deepen the existing bilateral trade and investment relations by seeking potential areas of collaboration particularly with the Flanders region as well as to invite VOKA to look more closely at the opportunity to do more business with ASEAN, by using Malaysia as a strategic springboard into the region. 

 

VOKA is the largest Flemish network of entrepreneurs in Belgium. It has 18,000 members which represent 62 per cent of the employment and the added value in the private sector in Flanders
