YB Foreign Minister Visited Quneitra, Golan Heights

The Honourable Datuk Anifah Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs, took the opportunity  at the sidelines of the 36th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC in Damascus, to visit the town of Quneitra, a town that was almost completely and systematically destroyed by the Israeli army before their withdrawal in June 1974. The Honorable Minister was personally briefed by the Governor of Quneitra, HE Riyad Hijab, and taken around the town which now lies in the demilitarized United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) Zone between Syria and Israel, a short distance from the de facto border between the two countries.

Visit of DG of Economic Planning Unit to Damascus (31 May – 2 June 2009)

Tan Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, Director General Economic Planning Unit, accompanied by officials from the public and private sector concluded a 3 day working visit to Damascus yesterday. The visit was at the invitation of EPU's counterpart agency, the Syrian planning Commission and aimed at exchanging information on each others’ national macroeconomic planning process. Syria is also interested at sharing Malaysia’s experience in the evaluation and review mechanism of economic planning. The visit was widely covered by the local media.

USM to reactivate collaboration with University of Damascus

Tan Sri Dato Dzulkifli Abd Razak, Vice Chancellor of USM held discussions with the authority of the University of Damascus to reactivate collaboration between the two institutions under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in 2003. USM was in Damascus to participate in the Science and Technology Forum, a sideline event organized in conjunction with the 36th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC that was held in Damascus from 23 – 25 May 2009.

During the Vice Chancellor’s visit to the Embassy, mission was briefed that one of the immediate activity for collaboration is the offer of post graduate studies (research) to students of University of Damascus before identifying other programs at a later stage.

Hon. Datuk Anifah Aman calls on Prime Minister of Syria

The Honorable Datuk Anifah Aman took the opportunity to call on His Excellency Eng. Naji Otri, Prime Minister of the Syrian Arab Republic, at the sidelines of the 36th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference. Issues of mutual interests were discussed during the meeting. His Excellency Prime Minister of the Syrian Arab Republic expressed his satisfaction over the state of bilateral relations between the two countries and continued to welcome more Malaysian involvement, both the public and private sector, in the economic development of Syria.

36th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference

The Honorable Datuk Anifah Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the Malaysian delegation to the 36th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Conference that was held in Damascus from 23 – 25 May 2009.  The Conference was inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. Bashar al- Assad, President of the Syrian Arab Republic. The Honorable Datuk Anifah Aman delivered a statement at the Plenary session, among which highlighting the need for members to persevere, not only to eliminate the political and religious discord, but, also to eradicate social and economic injustices particularly political instability, poverty and the quality of life of the Muslim Ummah,  calling for the OIC to redefine itself to meet he needs of the times and to determine the best initiatives and means for defending and advancing the common interests, as well as to focus on implementable resolutions and programs.
