PRESS RELEASE: SITUATION IN MYANMAR

The Government of Malaysia views with grave concern the unfolding situation in Myanmar including the violent suppression of demonstrators that has led to several deaths and the widespread arrests and detention of demonstrators.

The Foreign Minister of Malaysia has joined his ASEAN colleagues in expressing his revulsion to the Foreign Minister of Myanmar over the violence against the demonstrators, and has urged maximum restraint.

Additionally, the Government of Malaysia has expressed its fullest support for the mission of UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari and has called upon the Government of Myanmar to extend its full cooperation to him in the fulfillment of his mission.

The Government of Malaysia has also urged the Government of Myanmar to take note of the aspirations of the people of Myanmar for genuine national reconciliation and democratic reform. In this connection, the Government of Malaysia has reiterated its call for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and the direct engagement of all parties in Myanmar, including the National League for Democracy, in the political process.
