Malaysia And New Zealand To Determine Date For Implementing FTA
2009-10-27
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and New Zealand are working to determine the earliest possible date to implement their free trade agreement (FTA), preferably by next year.
Malaysia is hopeful that implementation of the FTA will provide much needed impetus for engagement of the private sectors of both countries, said the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
It said in a statement that this was discussed when New Zealand's Trade Minister Tim Groser called on International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed Tuesday.
Besides the Malaysia-New Zealand FTA, the ministers also exchanged views on the Asean-Australia-New Zealand FTA, Asean and regional integration, developments in the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and Malaysia's economy and Budget 2010.
The Malaysia-New Zealand FTA was signed in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Substantive areas of the bilateral agreement are trade in goods, customs cooperation, trade remedies, trade in services, movement of natural persons investment, intellectual property, economic cooperation and dispute settlement.
The Asean-Australia-New Zealand FTA which will be implemented on Jan 1, 2010, and Malaysia welcomed New Zealand's proposal to work more collaboratively with Asean, MITI said.
"Malaysia has always been receptive of proposals that serve to foster bilateral and regional ties with a view to provide an enabling and pro-business environment for the private sectors," it said.
Malaysia, like New Zealand, remained committed to the conclusion of the Doha Round, MITI said.
"Concluding the Doha negotiations would provide immediate benefit to world trade, through greater market openings and reduction in trade barriers," it said.
MITI also said that the two ministers in their discussion emphasised that trade restricting or protectionist measures should be avoided.
"Malaysia's and New Zealand's domestic markets are relatively small. Thus, businesses in both countries should leverage on each other's strengths and consider joint ventures and smart partnerships to access opportunities not only in our two countries but also to third countries," it said.

Malaysia Pasaran Penting New Zealand
2009-10-27
PUTRAJAYA 26 Okt.

Najib hopes FTA signing will encourage investments
2009-10-27
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia hopes the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand will encourage more companies there to view Malaysia as a suitable investment hub and gateway to the Asean market, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. He said the signing yesterday was the highlight of New Zealand Prime Minister John Key’s short visit to Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in the trade links between the two countries. He said his discussions with Key touched on where the two countries stood in terms of economic relations, especially as trade between them had almost doubled between 2006 and 2008. “Our bilateral trade in 2008 stood at RM6.15bil and although this year the numbers have fallen, we both believe it is a short-term phenomenon. “With the current global economic recovery, the total trade should be in an upswing in 2010 and beyond,” he said at a joint press conference with Key after their meeting at the Prime Minister’s office here yesterday. Najib said the two countries also had strong educational links and this was expected to be a key area to explore, along with tourism, which remained encouraging despite the economic downturn. Some 56,000 New Zealanders visited Malaysia last year. --- The Star Click link to view the joint press conference:

Trade Between New Zealand And Malaysia Expected To Soar Next Year
2009-10-26
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the trade figure between New Zealand and Malaysia will increase further next year following the signing of their free trade agreement (FTA) Monday.
"This year of course the trade number is going down as expected, but we are very confident that the figure will increase significantly next year," he said after the Free Trade agreement signing ceremony between Malaysia and New Zealand here.
Bilateral trade between the two countries increased by 46.2 percent to US$1.9 billion last year from US$1.3 billion in 2007.
The FTA agreement was signed by the Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mustapa Mohamed for Malaysia, while New Zealand's Minister of Trade Tim Groser signed on behalf of his country. The signing was witnessed by Najib and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.
Najib said the signing of the agreement signified a great political desire to bring the long standing relationship between the two countries to a higher level.
"I hope the private sectors from both sides will really look at the advantage of the greater access. Not only Malaysian investors can tap into New Zealand's market but New Zealand investors (can) look at Malaysia's market and beyond like Asean."
He also urged New Zealand business community to consider Malaysia as a spring board to tap into Asean huge market of about 580 million people.
The relationship in other areas such as tourism has been also very strong as more than 50,000 New Zealanders visit Malaysia annually and the number is still growing.
"It is not just about greater access to market and I think both sides can really find greater opportunities.
"It is clear for us that the future is very bright for us, a future that brings us closer together and for us to share greater prosperity, peace, stability and promises of betters days," he said.

FTA With NZ Significant Milestone For Both Nations, Says Najib
2009-10-26
PUTRAJAYA, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Malaysia and New Zealand Monday marks a significant milestone in trade and investment prospects for the two countries, says Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Speaking to reporters after a bilateral meeting with visiting New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at his office here, the Prime Minister said with the inking of the agreement, Malaysia was confident it would become a hub for New Zealand businessmen and investors to venture into the Asean market.
Hopefully, Malaysia will be used by New Zealand businessmen and investors as a gateway to the Asean market," he said after a 30-minute meeting with his New Zealand counterpart.
Najib said he hoped the FTA would spur more New Zealand companies to expand their operations to Malaysia as all outstanding trade and investment issues between the two countries have been resolved amicably.
" We had useful and positive discussions. We examined where we stood especially on economic relations. Bilateral trade figures between the two countries are strong.
" Two-way trade between the two countries swelled to RM6.15 billion in 2008 compared to 2006. Although bilateral trade volume has dwindled this year, we believe this is a short-term setback brought about by the global economic crisis.
We believe total trade will be on the upswing in 2010," said Najib, who is also Finance Minister. Najib said he and Key also discussed cooperation in education between the two countries which had traditional educational ties.
He said tourism links also looked promising despite the economic uncertainties, with 56,000 New Zealanders visiting Malaysia last year.
" Our discussions also delved on other areas like defence. New Zealand wants regional peace and security guaranteed. We are also looking for areas of cooperation in science and technology and information and communications technology (ICT),"he said.
Najib thanked New Zealand for its commitment towards the formation of the East Asian community and hoped the community would become a reality like the European Union (EU).
He said the Malaysia-NZ FTA signed would also cover environmental collabrations as " environment is an important consideration for Malaysia."
" We want to work with New Zealand since it has an excellent track record in this field. Furthermore, we are committed and gearing towards a green technology era. We are keen to work with New Zealand on environmental issues," he said.
Key, speaking at the same press conference, said signing of the FTA would provide a chance for New Zealand companies to venture into Malaysia and vice-versa.
" We see this as an opportunity for New Zealand companies to come to Malaysia and vice-versa. It's important for us," he said.
Key said New Zealand will also like to expand relations in tourism as Malaysia has been wooing about 1,000 New Zealanders a week to Malaysia.
The New Zealand Premier also said his country would work closely with Malaysia as Wellington would continue to be an Asean dialogue partner for the next three years.
