FACT SHEET TRANSFORMASI NASIONAL 2050 (TN50)

FACT SHEET TRANSFORMASI NASIONAL 2050 (TN50)

What is TN50?

Transformasi Nasional 2050, or TN50, is a national development initiative spanning the years 2020 to 2050. This initiative will be driven by clear 30-year goals and targets, which are being developed via an inclusive and consultative process. The general goal for TN50 is for Malaysia to become a top 20 country in the world by the year 2050.

TN50 will adopt a bottom-up approach to foster a sense of belonging and participation in the country’s development among the rakyat. In the run up to the unveiling of TN50 policy document set to be published in early 2020, a series of discourse focused on youth and other segments will be held from the year 2017 onwards to collect views from the public on what the Malaysian identity should be in 2050. On 19 January 2017, the Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, launched the first series of national discourse with some 500 youth leaders at Dewan Tunku Canselor, University of Malaya.

Why do we need TN50?

The world has changed tremendously since the previous vision-setting exercise, Vision 2020. As such, the process of discussing, planning and articulating TN50 is critical to ensure that the nation is prepared for the future beyond 2020. In order to continue to advance beyond this milestone, Malaysia will face several new long-term megatrends, which include the following:

Megatrend

Expected/Possible Impact

Larger population

Pressure placed on resources, environment and food/water supply

Longer life expectancy

Implications on working life, healthcare costs, social security

Shift in jobs and training

Expected mass adoption of fully automated systems and Artificial Intelligence, with implications on the nature of jobs in the future

Mega-Urbanisation

Continued rural-to-urban migration giving rise to mega-cities and more 'smart' cities

Climate change

Risk of warmer planet and its impact on food production, natural disasters

Economic power shift

Today's emerging Asia (China, India, Indonesia) redefining trade routes and geopolitics

Fast growth of Islam

Dramatically changing the global religious landscape

Advancement in science and technology

Presenting greater solution but also challenges such as privacy and security

Is TN50 replacing Vision 2020?

No. Vision 2020 still guides policy aims today and remains a symbolic milestone for Malaysians. TN50 is part of the same continuum in Malaysia's development journey, taking the baton from Vision 2020.

What are TN50’s aspirations?

TN50 aspirations are not cast in stone and will be refined based on the input received throughout the year. Seven focus areas identified for TN50 dialogues and engagements are:

·         Nilai Murni (Values)

·         Urustadbir (Governance)

·         Persekitaran (Ambience)

·         Pendidikan/Pembelajaran (Learning/Education)

·         Pekerjaan (Employment)

·         Gaya Hidup (Life Style)

·         Malaysia di Pentas Global (Malaysia  on the International Stage)

What is happening in 2017?

The focus for 2017 is to engage youths on their aspirations for Malaysia in 2050. The preparation of the final document on youth aspirations is set to be completed by the end of 2017. Engagement with other segments will take place in 2018 – 2019, after which the TN50 plan is scheduled to be published in 2020. A dedicated TN50 website http://www.mytn50.com regularly updates the activities carried out and news on TN50 as well as provides channels for gathering input such as the TN50 e-survey.

Programmes and activities on TN50 will be championed by two units:

Three Committees have been established to oversee and coordinate TN50 engagements in 2017:

What is KLN’s role?

KLN’s role is to aid the TN50 Secretariat in gathering input through a series of engagement and discourse activities aimed at articulating the aspirations of citizens in the area of foreign relations and how the Ministry can assist in realising the goal of becoming one of the top 20 economies by 2050.

To this end, KLN will:

(1)          Create awareness on TN50 among its officers in Putrajaya and abroad; and

(2)          Gather input through a series of engagements and consultations with the following target groups:

*      KLN officers at HQ and HBS at Missions abroad;

*      General Malaysian public (including Malaysians abroad); and

*      Relevant CSOs including think tanks.

The TN50 focal point for KLN is the Deputy Director General of Policy and Strategic Planning Division, Department of Policy Planning and Coordination (JPDP).

Ministry will circulate additional information on TN50 as soon as more information is made available by the TN50 Secretariat.

More background information on TN50 is available from the official website: www.mytn50.com
