Melaka Keen To Get Valparaiso's Help In Getting UN Recognition

From Mohd Bakri Darus

VALPARAISO, June 17 (Bernama) -- Melaka is keen to get Valparaiso's help for the Melaka Historical City to get world heritage city recognition from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said there was much Melaka could learn from Valparaiso, which received world heritage city recognition from Unesco in 2002.

"We will seek the cooperation of Valparaiso Mayor Aldo Cornejo Gonzalez to help us in this matter," he told Malaysian journalists, after a Melaka government delegation headed by Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob on a visit to Chile, called on the mayor here today.

The delegation, which left Melaka on June 13 and is on a two-week working visit to Latin America, arrived here yesterday. Before coming to Chile, the delegation had visited Argentina and will head for Cuba and Venezuala next.

It will also visit France before returning home on June 26.

Valparaiso, situated 120km north of Chile's capital Santiago, has a population of 300,000 and is a major world tourist destination. It signed an accord with Historical Melaka City in 1991 whereby each recognised the other as a twin.

Mohd Ali said Unesco representatives would be visiting Melaka next month to scrutinise Bandar Hilir there, which has over 2,600 heritage buildings, some built in the 14th century.

"We are optimistic of gaining the recognition by June next year," he said.

He added that the delegation also promoted Visit Malaysia Year 2007 to Chile's leaders and its people and had urged them to visit Malaysia in conjunction with its 50th independence anniversary.
