COURTESY CALL BY SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE EAST COAST ECONOMIC REGION DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL, 30 JANUARY 2018

Senior representatives from the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) led by Mr. Bernhard Schutte (Industry Expert/Investor Management) called on H.E Ambassador Datin Sarah Al Bakri Devadason on 30 January 2018 to share its economic development activities and plans on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which covers the states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Mersing, a district in northeast Johor.

The ECER development program, approved by the government in 2008, was formulated as a basis to guide the development of ECER until 2020 and involves Public-Private Participation (PPP) which emphasizes on the transfer of technology and knowledge-based economy aimed at transforming the ECER from an input-driven economy to a productivity-driven economy. It identifies projects and programmes to reduce regional socio-economic disparities, eradicate poverty and improve income and wealth distribution in a sustainable manner. Five key economic clusters, namely Manufacturing, Oil, Gas & Petrochemicals, Tourism, Agriculture and Human Capital Development will drive the development of ECER in line with the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

Under the Public-Private Participation, the government of Malaysia, through the ECERDC will be establishing the first ASEAN Competency Centre at the Pahang Technology Park (PTP) as part of Malaysia’s strategy to accelerate its readiness for the 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). A major milestone was sealed recently following the signing of two key strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between ECERDC with Bayern International GmbH and Technische Universität München (TUM). The cooperation is hoped to steer efforts to further upskill the local talent pool while at the same time drive knowledge and innovation-based activities for industries. TUM is Germany’s top-ranking university based on the QS World University Ranking, having produced as many as 13 Nobel Laureates and ranks among other prestigious technology-based institutions.
