Flag Off Ceremony For Larian Sahara-Sailing The Sand of Sahara at Aswan High Dam, 7 April 2012

Larian Sahara is a solo run by Malaysian female runner, Suwaibah Mohammad Nasir in Egypt. The run from Aswan to Port Said will cover the distance of 1111km and is expected to be completed within 32 days. The objectives of Larian Sahara are to create a Guinness World Record and a Malaysia Record as the first female runner to run across the Sahara as well as to place the name of Malaysia in the eyes of the world, especially in the Middle East and North Africa.

Larian Sahara was officially kick-started at Aswan High Dam in Aswan, 9.00am on 7 April 2012. The flag off was jointly officiated by a representative from the Embassy of Malaysia and representative of Aswan Governor, Mr Hany Rushdi Hassan Hebah, the Undersecretary of Ministry of Youth, Governorate of Aswan. Mr Abd El Hakeem Hussein, General Manager of Egyptian Tourism Authority, Aswan was also in attendance.

ASEAN Cairo Committee (ACC) Meeting With Red Sea Governor, 19 January 2012 in Hurghada

A meeting between the ASEAN Ambassadors and H.E. Major General Mahmoud Assem Gad, the Governor of Red Sea Governorate was held at the Governor’s Office in Hurghada.

Ambassador of Malaysia, H.E Dato’ Dr Mohd Fakhrudin Abdul Mukti as the Chairman of ACC in his speech thanked the Governor for the warm welcome to the delegates of ACC and wishes to further strengthen the bilateral relation between ASEAN countries with Egypt and Red Sea Governorate.

Matters discussed were the economic and development situation in the Red Sea Governorate, the economic plan, potential economic growth and potential investment and cooperation between Red Sea Governorate and ASEAN member states. Areas of interest from the Governorate include the sea water desalination project, electricity production by solar system, recycling of solid waste and transforming solid waste into electricity, Safaga port improvements and tourism. In that relation, The Governor invited the ASEAN member states to explore the future opportunity for cooperation.

The programme was organised by the Embassy of Malaysia with the cooperation from Medical Association, Mansurah Branch (PCM) and was successfully attended by 250 Malaysia citizens residing in Mansurah. The PMRM, known as MESRA '11 was a continuity of 2010's MESRA.

As part of the Embassy's effort to provide effective services to the Malaysian nationals, a few counter services were opened during MESRA '11. A consular service counter was opened by Consular Section of the Embassy, educational support services counters were opened by Education Malaysia Egypt (EME), Johor and Kelantan States Officers.

The audience had the opportunity to listen to a briefing on the security threats in Malaysia, which was presented by ACP Ishak Mohd Jani, PDRM Counsellor of the Embassy. Following the briefing, H.E. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fakhrudin Abdul Mukti, Ambassador of Malaysia to Egypt spoke to the audience on the current development in Malaysia and the Embassy expectations towards Malaysians, particularly the students in Mansoura. The audience seized the opportunity to exchange views and asked questions during a dialogue session with H.E. Ambassador.

The meeting was successfully held on the 26 December 2011 at the Mansoura University President’s office. H.E. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fakhrudin Abdul Mukti, Ambassador of Malaysia to Egypt led the Malaysia delegation while the management of Mansoura University was led by Prof. Dr. Abdel-Khalek El-Sayed Abdel-Khalek, the President of Mansoura University.

The Malaysian delegation comprised of the Deputy Chief of Mission, 4 Counsellors, Religious Attache, Kelantan State Student Affairs Officer and Johor State Student Affairs Officer. The meeting was also attended by the President, Deputy President and Deputy Secretary of the Medical Association Mansoura Branch (PERUBATAN Cawangan Mansoura – PCM).

The President of University Mansurah was accompanied by the Deputy President, Dean of Medical Faculty, Dean of Pharmacy Faculty, Dean of Dentistry Faculty and the University International Coordinator.

The meeting touched on the Malaysia students’ affairs at Mansurah University and future improvements for mutual benefits of Malaysia students and the university. The management of the university was also receptive to the complains and proposals made by the Malaysian students. The call was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere and lasted about two hours.

A meeting between H.E. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Fakhrudin Abdul Mukti, Ambassador of Malaysia to Egypt and H.E. General Staff Ir. Saladin Al-Ma’adawi, the Governor of Daqahliyah was held at the Governor’s Office in Mansoura on 26 December 2011. H.E. Ambassador was accompanied by Mr Shaiful Anuar Mohammad (Deputy Chief of Mission), Mr. Mohd Izwan Nuzaihan Jamil (Counsellor), ACP Ishak Mohd Jani (Counsellor) and Tn Hj Abdullah Mat Religious Attache of the Embassy of Malaysia.

Salient issues discussed during the courtesy call included current developments in Malaysia and Egypt and the level of public security and safety especially for Malaysian students in Mansoura. The meeting was followed by a press conference in which H.E. Ambassador responded to numerous questions on higher education, trade, agriculture, tourism and palm oil. In a nutshell, the meeting and press conference were held in a very warm and cordial atmosphere. It has enabled the Embassy to cultivate a good rapport with Daqahliyah authorities as well promoted Malaysia to Mansoura residents.

THE Malaysian embassy was quiet and partially lit as life slowly returned to normal in Cairo.

Security was light.

But on the fourth floor of the embassy, one room came to life — the operation room for the evacuation of over 11,000 Malaysian students from Egypt.

The room had maps hanging on the wall and a large white board.

The diplomatic staff manning the room were cheerful despite getting little sleep and rest. They had spent most nights sleeping on the sofa in the embassy. A plate of half eaten nasi lemak could be seen on a coffee table.

Asked if there was enough food, they replied in unison: “Enough!”

The Malaysian diplomats and their local staff have been working non-stop to evacuate Malaysian students from Cairo and other cities.

According to a Malaysian official who declined to be named, almost all the Malaysians evacuated by the embassy were students.

“The number of Malaysian expats here is very small. We only have about 200 Malaysian expats and that includes the embassy staff. Around 40 to 50 of them work for Petronas, one works for a foreign company and the rest are married to Egyptians,” said the official.

The families of Malaysian diplomats, however, have chosen to remain in Cairo.

“They don’t want to go home,” said one Malaysian diplomat.

Petronas employees returned home on their own while the Malaysians married to Egyptians remained in the country.

“The security here in Cairo was actually very good before the protests started. You could walk alone on the streets in the middle of the night without fear of being mugged,” said a diplomat.
