50TH MEETING TIP CONFERENCE “INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY - PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE” 11 DECEMBER 2017

Gathered during the 50th Meeting TIP Conference “Innovation and Technology Policy - PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE” on 11 December 2017 were past and present members of the TIP, government representatives, academics, and STI practitioners and leading experts from all OECD countries and participating countries. The Conference emphasized that work in the TIP would continue to be important. It was an exceptional occasion to shape ideas on the future of innovation and technology policy as well as take stock of TIP achievements since its creation in 1993. The Conference aimed at answering: What have we learnt from past work? What are the current most pressing demands concerning innovation policy? In what areas is innovation policy advice more needed?

With the One Planet Summit set to take place on the following day, the role of science and technology to address growing risks of environmental degradation and climate change was acknowledged. Science and technology could also be useful in addressing a range of global and societal issues. This is especially true when social entrepreneurs are involved in social technological ventures. Overlap and redundancies in research was identified as a challenge that needs to be resolved in order to have more efficient usage of funds for research and innovation.

The passionate keynote intervention delivered by YBhg. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia was reflective of the passion our government has for science, technology and innovation which are all important components of our economic policy. It was a great experience for all participants to gain the insights provided by Tan Sri on TIP in Malaysia.

(L-R) YBhg. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, Science Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia; H.E. Datuk Ibrahim Abdullah, Ambassador of Malaysia to France; and YBhg. Datuk Dr Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman, President & CEO, Malaysian Industry Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT).
