PRESS ARTICLES ON THE VISIT OF PRESIDENT FRANCOIS HOLLANDE TO MALAYSIA, 27 TO 28 MARCH, 2017

Hollande Arrives In Malaysia For Two-day State Visit

SEPANG, March 27 (Bernama) -- French President Francois Hollande arrived at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here today to begin his two-day state visit to Malaysia.

Hollande arrived in a private jet at about 8.25pm and on hand to receive him was Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, who is Minister-in-Attendance while Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein was also present.

He was given a red carpet welcome and walked past a guard of honour mounted by the Sixth Royal Ranger Regiment.

Wisma Putra in a statement today said Hollande was scheduled to have an audience with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V and hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Najib and Hollande would take stock of bilateral relations as well as explore other possible areas of collaboration, the statement said.

Both leaders are also scheduled to witness the signing of bilateral agreements and a memorandum of understanding aimed at further promoting cooperation and stimulate greater economic collaboration between Malaysia and France, it said.

This is the second state visit by a French President to Malaysia.

President Jacques Chirac paid a state visit to Malaysia in July 2003, a visit that was hailed as an important milestone for Malaysia-France bilateral relations.

"It is expected that President Hollande's visit will further intensify the excellent relations between the two countries," Wisma Putra said.

French president's visit coincides with anniversary of diplomatic relations

KUALA LUMPUR: French President Francois Hollande's state visit to Malaysia tomorrow is timely as it also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said Hollande's first visit to Malaysia will cover a broad range of areas, including defence, trade, investment, education and culture.

"Topics of discussion that will be highlighted with President Hollande during this state visit among others, are cooperation in defence, counter terrorism and trade.

"Both leaders will also discuss existing cooperation between Malaysia and France, as well as explore potential avenues of the future," Reezal said during a press conference held at Parliament's media centre here today.

France is Malaysia's fourth largest trading partner within the European Union countries.

Trade between the two countries saw an increase of 6.3% in 2016 from the previous year, and currently stands at RM15.23 billion.

Hollande's visit is the second presidential-level visit from France to Malaysia after President Jacques Chirac's visit in July 2003.

This visit is part of Hollande's first visit to the Asean region, which includes state visits to Singapore and Indonesia.

The welcoming ceremony began with the rendition of the national anthems of France and Malaysia by the Royal Malay Regiment central band from the Sungai Besi Camp, followed by a 21-gun salute.

The French President then inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by four officers and 103 men of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment led by Major Muhammad Eqram Muhammad Rosly.

French President Hollande Visits RMAF's 22 Squadron

PETALING JAYA, March 28 (Bernama) -- French President Francois Hollande visited the 22 Squadron of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Military Base here today, to view the newest member of logistic aircraft A400M, the M54-04.

The RMAF had purchased four A400M for the 22 Squadron from France-based aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, and the first of the logistic aircraft was received on March 13, 2015.

Hollande was given a warm welcome by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein upon his arrival at the 22 Squadron before they attended a closed-door meeting.

During the 15-minute meeting, it was understood that Hishammuddin had briefed Hollande on the condition and performance of the fourth and last A400M which was received on March 14 this year.

The French president, accompanied by Hishammuddin, was then taken to watch then Dassault Rafale Fighter jet air display conducted by Captain Jean-Guillaume 'Marty' Martinez during a heavy downpour.

Martinez, who was a French Air Force jet instructor, had previously conducted similar fighter jet air displays last week at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA'17).

On his performance today, the captain described it as a challenging one due to the heavy rain, windy condition and poor visibility, causing him to fly the jet at 500 to 1,500 feet.

KUALA LUMPUR: President Francois Hollande's state visit to Malaysia will draw more French companies to invest in the country, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

He said currently there are at least 270 French companies operating businesses in Malaysia, with an investment value of RM15 billion and in sectors that include manufacturing, services and finance.

"France is a country with a huge investment in Malaysia and also a strong superpower.

"Hence, this partnership will further enhance our business relationship. It will at the same time improve Malaysia's profile in the energy sector," he told reporters after witnessing six memorandums of understanding between the two governments here today.

The MoUs embrace the energy, solar power generation and gas sectors. Mustapa said the frequent contacts between Malaysia and France has resulted in productive bilateral outcomes.

He also said his ministry would hold continuous engagements with French companies in Malaysia.

Hollande arrived in Malaysia on Monday night. He is scheduled to leave for Jakarta tonight.

According to Mustapa, Malaysia has of late been on a weekly basis, receiving visitors from all over the world in respect of business partnerships and it included the Chairman of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma and King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia.

"This is a reflection of the confidence foreign companies have in Malaysia. As such, we expect foreign investments to increase," he added.

The MoUs signed today included that between French company Electricite de France and Tenaga Nasional Bhd.

Via the two-year MoU, both parties would benefit from sharing experiences and exchanging information on administration, management and technical aspects related to the energy sector.

Another MoU signed was between the French Group Engie, a global energy player and Sime Darby, to jointly develop business opportunities in solar energy and high-end state-of-the-art integrated facilities management services.

There was also a MoU between the Malaysian and French governments in the area of enhancing small and medium enterprises and innovative start-ups.

It was signed between Bpifrance and PlaTCOM Ventures.
