OFFICIAL VISIT OF
THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA, TUN DR. MAHATHIR MOHAMAD
TO THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY
24 TO 27 JULY 2019
Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will undertake an official visit to the Republic of Turkey from 24 to 27 July 2019. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah; Minister of Defence, Tuan Haji Mohamad Sabu; Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking; senior government officials; and media representatives. The visit is at the invitation of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
During the visit, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will have a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, followed by a delegation meeting between Malaysia and the Republic of Turkey. Both Leaders are expected to hold a joint press conference. The Turkish President will also host an official dinner in honour of the Malaysian Prime Minister. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is also expected to visit the Turkish Aerospace Industries.
Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is also scheduled to visit Istanbul during this official visit. In Istanbul, he is scheduled to visit the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport and Baykar Makina. He will also convene a Roundtable Discussion with the Captains of Industry from various economic sectors and a Dialogue Session with Turkish scholars. The Prime Minister will also meet the Malaysian diaspora on 26 July 2019.
This is the first official visit by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to the Republic of Turkey since his re-appointment as Prime Minister on 10 May 2018. The visit is expected to strengthen the existing bond of friendship and cooperation between Malaysia and the Republic of Turkey. It will provide an opportunity for the Malaysian Prime Minister to discuss ways and means to expand bilateral collaboration between the two countries, as well as exchange views on various issues of mutual concern and common interest.
The Republic of Turkey is an important economic partner for Malaysia. In 2018, total trade between the two countries recorded at RM9.79 billion. Exports from Malaysia to the Republic of Turkey stood at RM7.97 billion, while imports from the Republic of Turkey to Malaysia amounted to RM1.82 billion.
