APPLICATION FOR MALAYSIA'S CANDIDATE AS COMMISSIONER TO THE INDEPENDENT PERMANENT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION (IPHRC) OF THE ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC COOPERATION (OIC) (2019-2022)
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia is pleased to announce that the application for Malaysia’s Candidate as Commissioner to the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for the term 2019-2022 is now open.
IPHRC was established on 30 June 2011 and act as an expert body with advisory capacity to the OIC, working independently in the area of human rights. The Commission was established pursuant to provisions of the Ten-Year Programme of Action adopted at Makkah Al Mukarramah in December 2005, which called for the establishment of an independent permanent body to promote human rights in Member States.
IPHRC comprises 18 Commissioners with expertise in the area of human rights. They are elected on the basis of the principle of equitable geographical representation (six each from the African, Arab and Asian regions), as well as gender balance. The Commissioners are nominated by their respective governments.
Successful applicant will be selected as Malaysia’s Candidate to run for elections during the 46th Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 28 February to 3 March 2019. If elected, the IPHRC Commissioner will serve a term of three years and may be re-elected for one more term.
The Ministry would like to encourage the participation of all walks of society; from the civil societies, non-governmental organisation, academicians and the general public to ensure a wider participation by all levels and background. The open application for Malaysia’s Candidate to the IPHRC is conducted in line with the Government’s manifesto for a clear, transparent, merit-based, and participatory selection and appointment process.
