COMMONWEALTH DAY 2019 MESSAGE

MONDAY, 11 MARCH 2019

This year’s Commonwealth Day is celebrated today, 11 March 2019. Malaysia joins the Commonwealth family of nations to celebrate this day with the theme, ‘A Connected Commonwealth’, which speaks of the “enduring practical value and global engagement made possible as a result of the determination of our culturally diverse and widely dispersed family of nations to cooperate and work together in friendship and goodwill.”

This year also commemorates the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth which has seen fifty-three (53) countries with a shared history, voluntarily cooperating with each other in the pursuit of peace, sustainable economic growth and social development. To Malaysia, ‘A Connected Commonwealth’ is a place where the diverse Commonwealth members can thrive together and collaborate by varied means around the shared values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter.

Malaysia has contributed and will continue to contribute to the Commonwealth in areas such as prevention of violent extremism, peace and security, trade, sustainable development and empowerment of women and youth, among others. As a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat Countering Violent Extremism Unit Steering Group, Malaysia together with the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Royal Commonwealth Society are organising the “Commonwealth Youth Dialogue Conference: Youth Workshop on International Peace and Security and Building Community Resilience from the Ground Up”, in Kuala Lumpur on 2 – 5 April 2019. In the area of trade and women empowerment, Malaysia hosted the “Workshop on Inclusive Trade in Commonwealth”, jointly organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the International Trade Centre (ITC) on 29 – 30 January 2019.

Malaysia looks forward to further uphold the values and principles of the Commonwealth towards the achievement of global peace and security, sustainable economic growth and social development.
