FIRST COORDINATION MEETING FOR AICHR THEMATIC STUDY ON THE RIGHT TO SAFE DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION IN ASEAN,

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission of Human Rights (AICHR) with the support of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Ministry of Land, Water and Natural Resources is organizing the First Coordination Meeting for AICHR Thematic Study on the Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation in ASEAN on 18 November 2018 at the Marriot Hotel, Putrajaya. The AICHR Thematic Study is a follow up programme to the AICHR Regional Consultation on the Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation in ASEAN which was held successfully on 25-27 October 2017 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The Thematic Study will encompass the mapping of the legal framework related to water and sanitation of the ASEAN Member States (AMS) with a view to provide a comprehensive report with an analysis of strengths and areas for enhancement in respect of water governance in the region. Further, the study will provide essential baseline information to support the AMS to achieve targets within the context of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) as well as numerous interlinked goals across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs).
The Thematic Study will be conducted by 10 national researchers from AMS and five human rights experts who were also involved in the AICHR Regional Consultation held previously.
The Thematic Study on the Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation in ASEAN is a clear manifestation of Malaysia's continued efforts in strengthening the integration process and construction of the ASEAN community in promoting and protecting human rights to secure clean and safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in the region.
