OFFICIAL VISIT OF MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND COOPERATION

OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF TIMOR-LESTE, DR. DIONÍSIO DA COSTA BABO SOARES TO MALAYSIA

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Dr. Dionísio da Costa Babo Soares will be undertaking an Official Visit to Malaysia from 1 to 2 July 2019. This will be his first Official Visit to Malaysia following his appointment as the 7th Foreign Minister of Timor-Leste in June 2018.

This Official Visit will provide new impetus and further rejuvenate the existing friendly relations between both countries and to explore new areas of cooperation for a mutually strategic cooperation in trade and investment.

In addition to strengthening bilateral ties, the Official Visit is also part of his tour to ASEAN countries to garner support for Timor-Leste’s bid to join ASEAN. Malaysia fully supports Timor-Leste’s aspiration to become an ASEAN Member State.

Malaysia is one of Timor-Leste’s strongest collaborators with regard to its nation-building efforts. Malaysia has substantially provided capacity building and technical assistance among others through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) as well as in the defence and security sectors.

During the visit, Dr. Babo Soares will pay a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah followed by a Luncheon hosted by the latter.

From January to April 2019, total trade between Malaysia and Timor-Leste increased by 199.8% to USD16.0 million compared to the corresponding period of 2018. Meanwhile, in 2018, Malaysia was Timor-Leste’s 6th largest trading partner, 9th largest export destination and 6th largest source of imports.
