YAB TUN DR. MAHATHIR MOHAMAD TO THE KINGDOM OF THAILAND

24 AND 25 OCTOBER 2018

Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will undertake an official visit to the Kingdom of Thailand on 24 and 25 October 2018. The visit is part of his introductory visit to neighbouring Southeast Asian countries since his resumption in office as the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 10 May 2018. YAB Prime Minister and spouse, YABhg. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj. Mohd Ali will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking, and senior Government officials.

During his visit, YAB Prime Minister will be meeting his counterpart, the Prime Minister of Thailand, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, followed by an official dinner. YAB Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet the Malaysian diaspora in Thailand.

The visit will provide an opportunity for both leaders to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries. It would also allow Malaysia to highlight the Government’s current policies and its stand particularly on issues of mutual concern. Furthermore, both leaders would have the opportunity to exchange views on regional and global issues that are of common interest. The visit is also expected to add momentum to the Southern Thailand peace dialogue process. The Government has recently appointed former Inspector-General of Police, YBhg. Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Mohd Noor, as the new Facilitator for the peace talks.

On economic cooperation, Malaysia’s total trade with Thailand in 2017 recorded a significant growth of 18.43% amounting to RM98.69 billion from RM86.46 billion in 2016. Thailand is Malaysia’s fifth largest trading partner and the second largest among ASEAN countries after Singapore. From the Thai perspective, Malaysia is Thailand’s largest trading partner among ASEAN countries and the fourth largest among its trading partners in the world.
