STATE VISIT BY PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA (ROK)
MOON JAE-IN TO MALAYSIA

The President of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Moon Jae-in, and First Lady, Kim Jung-sook will undertake a State Visit to Malaysia from 12 to 14 March 2019.
During the visit, President Moon will be received by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah ibni Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah in a State Welcoming Ceremony at the Parliament of Malaysia on 13 March 2019. This will be followed by a State Banquet hosted by the His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI in honour of President Moon and delegation at Istana Negara.
President Moon is also scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on 13 March 2019. Both leaders are expected to discuss various bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interests. The elevation of bilateral ties, the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Republic of Korea in 2020, as well as the enhancement of ASEAN-Republic of Korea relations will be among the main issues to be deliberated.
Both leaders will also be witnessing the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) involving the industrial cooperation related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), cooperation in the field of transportation, cooperation in the development of Smart City in Malaysia, as well as cooperation in the sector of halal industry. A Joint Press Statement will ensue at the end of the bilateral meeting.
President Moon will be the first Head of State to be hosted by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI since His ascension to the throne on 31 January 2019. The last state visit by the President of the Republic of Korea to Malaysia was that of President Lee Myung-bak, from 9 – 10 December 2010, for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Republic of Korea.
During the visit, President Moon and the First Lady will be accompanied by the Republic of Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy; Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport; as well as senior government officials. This State Visit is expected to further reinvigorate Kuala Lumpur-Seoul ties and lay the new groundwork for the bilateral relations to flourish.
In 2018, bilateral trade between Malaysia and the Republic of Korea recorded an upsurge of 7.2 percent to reach USD17.98 billion (RM72.60 billion), as compared to USD15.76 billion (RM67.71 billion) in 2017. The Republic of Korea was Malaysia’s 8th largest trading partner globally and the 13th largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2018. Malaysia, on the other hand, was the Republic of Korea’s 14th largest trading partner for the same year.
From January until September 2018, a total number of 463,004 tourists from the Republic of Korea have visited Malaysia, which represents a 33.1 percent increase as compared to the same corresponding period in 2017.
