PRESS RELEASE : STATEMENT BY MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MALAYSIA REGARDING ALLEGATION MADE BY PARTI BERSATU SABAH SECRETARY GENERAL TOWARDS WISMA PUTRA WITH REGARDS TO CLAIM ON SABAH

STATEMENT BY MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MALAYSIA REGARDING ALLEGATION MADE BY PARTI BERSATU SABAH SECRETARY GENERAL TOWARDS WISMA PUTRA WITH REGARDS TO CLAIM ON SABAH

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia wishes to refer to an article that appeared in Free Malaysia Today on 22 February 2019. The article relates to the response made by the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Malaysia, Charles Jose, during a press conference held on 21 February 2019. The Ministry also wishes to respond to the statement made by Secretary General of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Mr Jahid Jahim. Both statements relate to the Philippines’ claim on Sabah.

On this matter, the Foreign Ministry has continued to reiterate Malaysia’s position, namely the claims on Sabah are without basis. Sabah has been recognised by the United Nations (UN) and the international community as part of Malaysia since the formation of the Federation on 16 September 1963. As such, Malaysia does not recognise and will not entertain any claims by any party on Sabah.

On the comments by Mr. Jahid Jahim, the Ministry wishes to emphasise that Malaysia has without fail asserted its position on the matter. At the same time, Mr. Jahid Jahim's statement is misleading and has the potential to damage the excellent ties which Malaysia and the Philippines currently enjoy. This bilateral relation is important not only for both countries but for the entire region as well.
