PRESS RELEASE : STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN GAZA

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN GAZA

Malaysia is deeply concerned on the deteriorating situation in Gaza. Over the past few days, it is reported that Hamas and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have been engaged in rounds of intense fighting, triggered by IDF’s earlier raid in Gaza that killed at least 7 Palestinians. Subsequently, another 5 Palestinians were killed and 20 other were wounded in the IDF’s airstrikes, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza.

  1. The current developments in Gaza reflects a situation that is deeply alarming. As the occupying power, Israel is obligated under international law to ensure the protection of the civilians under its rule. Instead, by committing atrocities against the Palestinian people indiscriminately, Israel has done exactly the opposite.

  1. Malaysia reiterates the call for the need to establish international protection for the Palestinian people. Such protection, which is in line with international humanitarian law, should constitute confidence-building measures as well as prevent continuing massacres and violations of human rights.

  1. Malaysia further regards the actions taken by the IDF as a direct threat to any potential peace process. Malaysia strongly urges both sides to restrain from taking any action that could further hamper any attempt at peace.

  1. Malaysia firmly upholds its position that a two-State solution, in which the Palestinians and Israelis live side by side in peace, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, is the only viable solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
