TO THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia will undertake an Official Visit to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from 17 to 21 August 2018 at the invitation of Li Keqiang, Premier of the State Council of the PRC.

 

YAB Prime Minister will be accompanied by his spouse YABhg Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj Mohd Ali; Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah; Minister of Primary Industries, YB Teresa Kok Suh Sim; Minister of International Trade and Industry, YB Ignatius Darell Leiking; Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry, YB Dato’ Salahuddin Ayub; Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law), YB Datuk Liew Vui Keong; Minister of Entrepreneurship Development, YB Tuan Mohd Redzuan Md. Yusof; Chief Minister of Perak, YAB Ahmad Faizal Dato’ Azumu; and senior government officials.

 

This is the maiden visit by YAB Prime Minister to the PRC after assuming office in May 2018. YAB Prime Minister visited the PRC seven times during his term as the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003.

 

During the visit, YAB Prime Minister will be visiting Hangzhou and Beijing. In Hangzhou, YAB Prime Minister is scheduled to meet provincial leaders, undertake a visit to Alibaba Group Corporate Headquarters and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. In Beijing, YAB Prime Minister will be meeting Premier Li Keqiang and President Xi Jinping respectively to discuss bilateral issues as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

YAB Prime Minister and Premier Li Keqiang will witness the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to mark the strengthening of Kuala Lumpur – Beijing strategic partnership. The MoUs are in the areas of agriculture and agricommodity.

 

In Beijing, YAB Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold dialogues with renowned entrepreneurs as well as potential investors from the PRC. He will also host a dinner for the Malaysian diaspora.

 

This visit will serve as a new milestone in the consolidation of bilateral ties between Malaysia and the PRC. It will set new strategic pillars to invigorate the future cooperation between the two countries, especially in the political, trade, investment, agriculture, technology and regional security realms.

Malaysia and the PRC continue to maintain their close and comprehensive bilateral relations. The PRC has been Malaysia’s top trading partner for the past nine consecutive years. In 2017, the total bilateral trade between the two countries stood at RM290.65 billion (USD67.72 billion).
