TO MALAYSIA, 20-21 DECEMBER 2018

 

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Kang Kyung-wha will undertake a working visit to Malaysia from 20 to 21 December 2018. This is Kang Kyung-wha’s first visit to Malaysia since her appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK on 18 June 2017.

During the visit, Kang Kyung-wha is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah in Wisma Putra, Putrajaya. Both leaders are expected to discuss various issues of mutual interest including the proposed State Visit by President Moon Jae-in to Malaysia in 2019 and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Malaysia-ROK diplomatic relations in year 2020.

Kang Kyung-wha is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, Putrajaya and exchange views on contemporary regional as well as international issues of common concern.

The visit of Kang Kyung-wha to Malaysia is expected to add a new impetus to the strong bilateral relations that have been developed between Malaysia and the ROK since 23 February 1960. ROK is not only an important trading partner for Malaysia, but also a key country for foreign direct investment (FDI) and tourist arrivals.

Statistics have shown that bilateral trade between Malaysia and the ROK grew by 13.6 percent in 2017 to reach RM67.71 billion as compared to the previous year. ROK is Malaysia’s 8th largest trading partner globally and the 13th largest foreign investor in 2017.

In 2017, the ROK was the 7th highest source of tourist arrivals with a total of 484,528 arrivals in Malaysia, an increase by 9.0 percent as compared to 2016.
