TO ATTEND THE SECOND BELT AND ROAD FORUM FOR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION,

BEIJING, PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA

24 – 28 APRIL 2019

 

The Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will lead the Malaysian delegation to the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (2nd BRF) in Beijing, China, from 24 to 28 April 2019.

 

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by his spouse Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj. Mohd Ali and several ministers including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah and the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking.

 

The theme of the 2nd BRF this year is “Belt and Road Cooperation: Shaping a Brighter Shared Future”. Tun Dr. Mahathir has been invited to share his views during the High Level Meeting and Leaders’ Roundtable on the theme Strengthening Policy Synergy and Building Closer Partnership”.

 

As of 23 April 2019, a total of 37 world leaders, including the Prime Minister of Malaysia have confirmed their participation in this forum. The Prime Minister’s attendance at the 2nd BRF is significant given that Malaysia has continuously support the Belt and Road Initiative, especially on key development issues, such as policy synergy, infrastructure development, financial cooperation and people-to-people connectivity.

 

The Prime Minister will also meet President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping and Premier of the State Council, Li Keqiang respectively. During the meetings, both sides are expected to discuss various bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interests. Premier Li and Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir will also witness the signing of MoU on Palm Oil Cooperation.

 

Apart from the official programme, the Prime Minister will also be visiting some high-tech companies in Beijing, namely Huawei Technologies and SenseTime Private Ltd. He is also scheduled to meet key investors, international capital market analyst as well as renowned business community based in Beijing.

 

China is a close friend and an important partner to Malaysia. This visit is expected to strengthen the long-standing friendship between Malaysia and China as well as foster wide-ranging cooperation between the two countries.
