The Honourable Datuk Richard Riot anak Jaem was born on 1st December 1951 in Serian, Sarawak. He is a teacher by training, having graduated from Batu LintangTeachers’ College, Kuching, Sarawak in 1971. He also holds a Diploma on personnel Management from Cambridge Tutorial College, Jersey, Britain. He obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration from Chartered Institute of Business Administration (Ireland), Teoranta in 1994 and Master of Business Administration from Preston University, United States of America.


His political career started in 1990 when he won the Serian Parliamentary Seat on an Independent ticket. In 1993, he joined Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), a component party of the National Front (Barisan Nasional) Coalition. From there onwards his political career kept on shining-winning the Serian Parliamentary Seat in four consecutive General Elections (1995, 1999, 2004, 2008).


The Honourable Datuk Richard Riot anak Jaem was conferred with the award Darjah Kebesaran Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1997, Johan Bintang Sarawak (JBS) by TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak in 1998 and Darjah Kebesaran Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) which carries the title of “Datuk” by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2005.


The Honourable Datuk Ricard Riot anak Jaem was Chairman of Malaysian Pepper Board since 2007 until his appointment as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Prior to that, he was Chairman of Sarawak Rivers Board for six years. He has been a Board Member of Sarawak Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) since year 2000 and still is. He is also Chairman of its Audit Committee. He was the Deputy President of Football Association of Sarawak (2007/2008).


He is an Assistant Secretary-General and a Central Working Committee Member of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).
