The nation’s first diplomatic missions were set up in London, Washington, Canberra, New York, New Delhi, Jakarta and Bangkok. In 1963, while 21 foreign nations had established their Diplomatic Missions in Malaysia, Malaysia has established 14 Diplomatic Missions overseas in a span of six years since its independence. The number grew steadily to 21 in 1966, a watershed year for the Ministry distinguished by an accelerated growth, particularly with regards to personnel and the financial allocations for its activities. Malaysia today has a network of 105 diplomatic missions spanning the globe with 17 High Commissions; 64 Embassies; 2 Permanent Mission to the United Nations; 18 Consulate Generals Office; 2 Consulate Offices; 1 Malaysia Friendship and Trade Centre (MFTC); and 1 Liaison Office - a proud testament on how far Wisma Putra has progressed over the years, in tandem with the nation.
