ATTACK ON TWO TANKERS IN THE GULF OF OMAN
Malaysia is deeply concerned at the rapid escalation of tension in the Middle East, an area of vital interest for Malaysia and the world. We view very seriously the most recent reports of attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman on 13 June 2019. These destructive acts on civilian commercial ships are a clear violation of international law, threatens international freedom of navigation and freedom of commerce.
As a respecter and promoter of international law, Malaysia believes that any reaction to these attacks must be based on evidence and facts. Based on available information, we believe that it is premature to ascertain the perpetrators of these acts. Malaysia therefore calls for an open, transparent and objective international investigation. Those found responsible for this crime must be brought to justice.
Malaysia urges all parties to exercise utmost restraint and avoid any actions that could further escalate tension in the region. Malaysia will support any credible and impartial effort aimed at deescalating the present tensions and resolving the conflicts that currently bedevil the region.
