The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman will be leading the Malaysian delegation to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat) in Singapore from 4 to 6 February 2018. The Foreign Minister will be accompanied by his wife and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to ASEAN. The AMM Retreat will be preceded by several important meetings, namely the Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) on 4 February 2018 and followed by the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) on 5 February 2018.


Since this is the first time that the Foreign Ministers will meet during Singapore’s Chairmanship of ASEAN, the discussions at the Retreat are anticipated to be crucial in laying the groundwork for ASEAN’s initiatives and progress throughout the year 2018.


Among the key issues that will be discussed by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers are the key themes introduced by Singapore in its capacity as Chairman of ASEAN, which are ‘Resilience’ and ‘Innovation’.


In relation to these two key themes, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers are expected to deliberate and strategise on the means to strengthen ASEAN’s collective resillience against common threats and challenges towards the region such as terrorism and violent extremism, maritime issues and cyber threats. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers are also expected to discuss on schemes that may promote innovation in the region.


In addition to this, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers are also expected to deliberate on ASEAN’s progress in its community building efforts and ASEAN’s conduct of its external relations. Most importantly, the AMM Retreat will provide the ASEAN Foreign Ministers with a platform to discuss on regional and international issues of common concern.


The Foreign Minister is expected to raise several important regional issues which has a direct implication towards the nation and the region’s security and stability.
