MALAYSIA COMES TO ZAGREB! Week-long Malaysian Cultural Festival will give Croatians a chance to catch a glimpse of Malaysia

From 9 to 15 November, the Embassy of Malaysia to the Republic of Croatia will organize a Malaysian food and cultural festival. This is the very first time that an event of such scale is staged in Zagreb to expose exotic Malaysian culture to Croatians.

The main rationale behind organizing the event is to bring Malaysians and Croatians closer together and to help further strengthen relations between the two countries. His Excellency Mr Stjepan Mesic, President of the Republic of Croatia, and Mrs Mesic and other leading figures of Croatian society have consented to grace the launch of the event.

“I still remember my visit to Malaysia a few years ago,” says President Mesic, “Everything I saw and heard impressed me very much and I do believe that Malaysia should be one of our main partners in South-East Asia.”

“Therefore,” he continued, “I welcome the opportunity that citizens of Croatia will be able, thanks to the 1Malaysia Festival 2009, Zagreb to learn as much as possible about this interesting and important country and about its desire to act as one.”

Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Croatia, Her Excellency Mrs Aminahtun Karim Shaharudin, adds, “A renowned Malaysian Batik personality, Kartini Illias, two acclaimed Malaysian chefs and a popular Malaysian cultural troupe, the Sri Bulan Dance Troupe will be flown in especially for the occasion to ensure that the offerings to the Croatian public is as authentic as possible.”

“The Embassy is very grateful for and encouraged by the support given to us by both Malaysian and Croatian organizations,” she continues, “It augurs well for Malaysia-Croatia relations in general and the future of business relationships in particular. We sincerely appreciate the cooperation and partnership of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines, Tourism Malaysia, Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture of Malaysia, Croatian Airlines, Etours, Koncar, Monting, Belupo, Zvecevo, A.V.I.D. in making this event a success.”

The event is called the 1Malaysia Festival 2009, Zagreb. It will feature a wide variety of Malaysian food, batik fashion show, supplemented by a demonstration on the art of batik drawing, and colourfully exotic traditional dances of the various ethnic groups of Malaysia. The festival will be held at the Fountain Restaurant on the ground floor of the Sheraton Zagreb Hotel.

Additionally, on Friday 13 November, the cultural show will bring its vibrant colours and excitement to the Avenue Mall in Zagreb. Traditional dances representing the various races living in Malaysia will be performed on stage at the main entrance to the Mall. There will also be a batik painting demonstration while a unique and dynamic art of tea-making will enthrall shoppers at the Mall. As an added bonus, a Croatian who has lived in Malaysia will speak to the audience about her impressions of the country, the people and their culture from a Croatian perspective. Mrs Zrinka ┼ákarica has written a book about her stay in Malaysia and has delivered more than 20 talks all over Croatia to tell Croatians more about this exotic country. The performances will be held between 4.00 and 6.00 pm. All are welcome.

The 1Malaysia concept espoused by the present Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak has been chosen as the theme for the festival to show that Malaysia’s different racial groups are united through the understanding of each others’ culture. By extension, it is through the people of the world understanding each other better that the goal of greater world peace and harmony can be more easily achieved.

Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Croatia was established in 1992 and an embassy was established in Zagreb in 1994. The Republic of Croatia in turn, established an embassy in Kuala Lumpur in 1995.
