History History

Malaysia and Lao PDR established its Diplomatic Relations on 1 July 1966.

At the beginning, the Embassy of Malaysia was represented by a diplomat at the Charge d'Affaires a.i. (CDA) level. The first CDA was Mr. Mon Jamaluddin, from 1 March 1972 until 27 April 1974. Only after eight CDAs, the Embassy was represented by an Ambassador. The first Ambassador of Malaysia to Lao PDR was H.E. Abdul Wahab Harun, from 4 June 1992 until 3 September 1995.

Since the establishment of the Diplomatic Relations between both countries, Malaysia and Lao PDR have consistently maintained a brotherly relationship based on trust, mutual respect, goodwill and understanding. Exchanges of visits between leaders of both countries have further enhanced the relationship between the two countries in all areas of cooperation. In June 2010, the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak made an Official Visit to Lao PDR. This was followed by the State Visit of H.E. Choummaly Sayasone, President of the Lao PDR to Malaysia in November 2010. This first ever visit by a President of Laos to Malaysia since the establishment of diplomatic relations has marked a new milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
