OVERVIEW OF MALAYSIA – QATAR BILATERAL RELATIONS

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and the State of Qatar in 1974, bilateral relations between the two countries continue to remain warm and friendly.  Both countries have cooperated successfully in a wide range of areas of common interest at the international fora under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).  In terms of diplomatic representation, Malaysia established its Embassy in Doha in August 2004, while Qatar reciprocated it in September 2004.

Trade is an important pillar of Malaysia-Qatar bilateral relations.  In 2017, Qatar was ranked as the 40th largest trading partner among 235 countries that Malaysia traded with.  Total bilateral trade in 2016 decreased by 32% to USD566 million (RM2.37 billion) from USD842 million (RM3.18 billion) in 2015.
