Serbia expels Malaysian ambassador

BELGRADE: Serbia's Foreign Ministry says the government has expelled Malaysia's ambassador after Kuala Lumpur recognised the independence of breakaway Kosovo.

The ministry said the Malaysian envoy Saw Ching Hong has 48 hours to leave the country.

The move follows the expulsion earlier this month of Montenegrin and Macedonian ambassadors over their countries' recognition of Kosovo, AP reported.

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Foreign Minister Rais Yatim immediately defended the Government’s recognition of Kosovo saying it was meant to "help meet the aspirations of the Kosovo people in wanting an independent country.''

Malaysia plans to establish diplomatic ties with Kosovo at a suitable time, Rais added in a statement Saturday through Bernama.

Kosovo, a former Serbian province with 2.1 million people, declared independence in February and about 50 countries, including the United States and European Union members, have recognised its independence.

However, Serbia refuses to recognise the split and has asked for a U.N. court's opinion on whether the secession was legal.

Russia, historically a close of ally of Serbia, opposes Kosovo's independence, a move that completed the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia.
