Malaysia’s legal system contemplates the death penalty for the possession or traffic of illegal drugs, so it is advisable to exhaustively check the content of any material or package which you have been requested to carry by a third person. Authorities also recommend never leave your baggage unattended at all public areas.

Language

The official language in Malaysia is Bahasa Melayu (Malay), but English is generally and widely spoken by most people, especially in large cities: Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor  Bahru, Melaka, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

Local Currency

The local currency is the Malaysian ringgit which is divided in 100 cents. The largest bill is the RM 1,000.00 (one thousand Malaysian ringgits) and the coins with highest value is of RM 0.50 (fifty cents).

Travellers cheques and U.S. dollars, as well as other currencies may be changed in tourism sites, hotels and all banks, which in Malaysia are numerous, both local and foreign. The exchange rate for the month of October 2013 is USD$ 1.00 = RM3.2856.

Other Recommendations

Even though Malaysia’s cities are cosmopolitan, the country is multicultural, and it is advisable to observe the social, cultural and religious norms of the various ethnic and religious groups in the country. For example, to visit to a mosque shoes must be removed upon entering, and women should cover their heads with a scarf. Women must dress modestly in long gowns and long sleeves and avoid using shorts or a low neckline.
