MALAYSIAN TEAMS TRIUMPH AT THE DUBAI ASEAN CUP
FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
In conjunction with the UAE National Day last week, ASEAN Community in the UAE participated in the “DUBAI ASEAN CUP Football Tournament” at Al Ahli Football Club Stadium, Dubai. The event was sponsored by Singapore Muslim Group (SMG), Al Ahli Football Club, Emirates Security Company, HUAWEI and ZAF International. The Consulate General of Malaysia, Dubai supported the event from beginning as part of the public diplomacy initiatives and also to create connection with ASEAN citizens in the UAE.
The DUBAI ASEAN Cup was first introduced in year 2004 with the goals to enliven the spirit of camaraderie within ASEAN citizens. This year, five (5) ASEAN member-states namely Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Myanmar participated in the event. Around 42 teams joined this year’s edition which took 132 matches to complete the contest. For the first time in history since the tournament took place, Malaysian team won in two main categories namely “Champions League” and “Senior Veteran Group”. Mr. Ali Mahadi, 17 years old Malaysian was nominated as the Best Player of the tournament.
The event was attended by more than 500 ASEAN citizens from Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Northern Emirates. At the sidelines, various ASEAN delicacies were sold throughout the occasion. This annual event is part of the initiative to realize the ASEAN Community Vision by 2025.
