50th ASEAN DAY CELEBRATION

14 AUGUST 2017

The ASEAN Consular Corps in Perth celebrated the Golden Jubilee of ASEAN in style where more than 150 invitees attended the celebration that was held on 14 August 2017.

The event was graced by the presence of Hon. Paul Papalia MLA who represented the Premier of Western Australia as well as Hon. Tony Krsticevic who represented the Leader of the Opposition. Also in attendance were representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government agencies and other invitees. This year’s celebration was particularly special as it was the first time representatives from all 10 ASEAN Member States were present and majority of ASEAN Dialogue Partners, Sectoral Partners and Development Partner were present too.

In delivering his remarks on behalf of the ASEAN Consular Corps in Perth, Consul-General Nazarudin Jaafar of Malaysia had underscored the importance of ASEAN Community and the community building process. He also highlighted the increasing presence of ASEAN in Western Australia in terms of tourists’ arrival, students studying at tertiary level as well as more than 100,000 ASEAN-origin inhabitants in Western Australia.

Malaysia, as the Chair of the ASEAN Consular Corps in Perth, had put up a great line up to the celebration with the setting up of a mini gallery on ASEAN in the forms of posters and exhibits. ASEAN Anthem was performed live by Malaysian students in Perth. The invitees were also entertained with cultural performances from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

In line with the spirit of unity among ASEAN Member States, the event was hosted at the Multipurpose Hall of the Consulate-General of Indonesia and the generous spread of food was collectively prepared by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam.
