MALAYSIA CROWNED CHAMPION OF THE BANGABANDHU GOLD CUP FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT, 8 FEBRUARY 2015
Malaysia under 23 National Football Team became the champion of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Tournament hosted by Bangladesh on 8 February 2015 after a scintillating display of football from both teams. Malaysian team managed to beat the home team in the final match thanks to Faizal Ghazali’s header into the top corner of the net bringing the final score-line to 3-2 against Bangladesh.
The High Commission of Malaysia managed to organize a group of 50 Malaysian supporters comprises of officials of the High Commission, students and Malaysian expatriates in Dhaka at the Bangladesh stadium that was packed with around 56,000 Bangladeshi supporters. Her Excellency Norlin Othman also hosted a dinner in honour of the victorious team on 9 February 2015 which was attended by the Malaysian footballers and officials, accompanying Bangladesh officials and Malaysians in Dhaka.
The Bangabandhu Gold Cup is a prestigious football tournament held in conjunction with the Bangladesh National Day which falls on 26 March and named after the Father of the Nation (Bangabandhu) Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The trophy was handed over by the Hon. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina accompanied by the Hon. A.M.A. Muhith, Finance Minister of Bangladesh and the High Commissioner of Malaysia. Malaysia was in Group A together with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka while Group B consists of Thailand, Singapore and Bahrain. Malaysia won all its matches in the Group A team and beat Singapore in the semi-final to reach the final match with Bangladesh.
