Earthquake in Ecuador
On 16 April 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the central coastal region of Ecuador. The earthquake was centered 27 kilometres from the town of Muisne and 170 kilometres from Quito, the capital of Ecuador. It was reported that 262 people have lost their lives and 2,572 people were injured. The Embassy of Malaysia in Santiago, Chile, accredited to Ecuador, informed that two (2) Malaysians working in Ecuador are currently safe.
The Government of Ecuador has announced a state of emergency in the affected areas and the relevant authorities are handling the situation by taking all necessary measures to assist the victims.
