EARTHQUAKE IN KUMAMOTO PREFECTURE, JAPAN
14 APRIL 2016
A 6.5-magnitude earthquake reportedly hit Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu region located 1,186km south of Tokyo at 9.26 pm on 14 April 2016. It was reported that at least nine local residents have lost their lives and 765 people were injured.
The Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo had been able to contact 18 Malaysian students studying in Kumamoto University, the National College of Technology Kumamoto and Ariake National College of Technology. To date, all of them are safe and have moved to the evacuation zone designated by the Japanese authorities in Kumamoto City. The Embassy is confirming the status of other Malaysians who may have been in the affected area at the time.
The Japanese Government has announced that the relevant authorities are handling the situation by taking all necessary measures to assist the victims where possible.
Wisma Putra and the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo are closely monitoring the situation. The Embassy is also in close contact with the Japanese authorities for the latest updates on the situation and for any advisories.
