Ambassador Dato’ Ismail Mustapha made a working visit to the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais on 2 – 4 April. During the visit, he paid courtesy calls on the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Vice-Governor and the Mayor of Belo Horizonte and had a discussion with the State Secretary for Economic Development.

During the conversations with the State officials, the Ambassador briefed them of the overall state of relations between Malaysia and Brazil and in particular with the State of Minas Gerais. He also discussed with them on ways and means to further expand bilateral relations between Malaysia and the State of Minas Gerais especially in areas of trade and investments. The Ambassador was also briefed on local business opportunities when he visited the International Business Center of the State’s Federation Industries.

O programa incluiu visita de cortesia ao presidente da Assembléia Legislativa Jose Alves Viana, ao Vice-Governador Antonio Anastásia e ao Prefeito de Belo Horizonte, Márcio Lacerda, quando foram discutidos modos e meios de desenvolver ainda mais as relações bilaterais entre Minas Gerais e a Malásia.

Minas Gerais is an important trading partner for Malaysia where the bulk of cast iron and raw sugar are sourced from while Minas Gerais’ imports are integrated circuits, air compressors and electric engine. Trade balance between Malaysian and Minas Gerais has always been in Minas Gerais favour.

Minas Gerais é o terceiro estado mais importante em termos de comércio com a Malásia. As estatísticas mostram que a corrente de comércio entre a Malásia e Minas Gerais alcançou a marca de US$149 milhões em 2008. As principais exportações do Estado incluem ferro fundido bruto e açúcar de cana, enquanto a Malásia exporta circuitos integrados, compressor de ar e motores elétricos.

The Ambassador also had an opportunity to visit CVRD, the biggest integrated iron group in Brazil. CVRD briefed the Ambassador of its plan to invest in the palletization plant and distribution centre for East Asia, to be sited in Lumut.

The Ambassador also visited the old city of Ouro Preto, a UNESCO heritage city and a one time capital of the Minas Gerais. The Ambassdor and the Mayor exchanged ideas on the best ways to preserve old heritage and how to benefit from it.
