DIPLOMATIC RECEPTION IN OTTAWA TO COMMEMORATE THE 56TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL DAY OF MALAYSIA
The High Commission of Malaysia in Ottawa hosted a reception to commemorate the 56th National Day on 16 September 2013 at Rumah Malaysia. The reception was attended by close to 300 guests which includes Senators, Members of Parliaments, members of think tank institutions, academicians and the business communities.
High Commissioner, Dato Hayati Ismail in her welcoming remarks highlighted the excellent bilateral relation with Canada. She also promoted Global Movement of Moderates, an initiative of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that calls for combating the scourge of extremism in five broad areas - peaceful co-existence, democracy and rule of law, finance, education and conflict resolution.
The guest of honour at the reception was Senator Thanh Hai Ngo, representing Foreign Minister John Baird. In his speech, he remarked that Canada was among the first countries to recognize the independence of the then Malaya, and economic, security, people-to-people relations have developed steadily since 1957. He also added that Canada is looking forward to Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2015, and ensuring the two countries are able to engage at the senior most level within the East Asia Summit process to meet both Canadian and Malaysian common objectives. He also added that Malaysia is an ever more important and valued partner for Canada.
The guests at the reception were served with authentic Malaysian dishes such as satay and also teh tarik.
