Working Visit of the Minister at the Premier's Department Office of Sarawak, 6 - 11 July 2024
The High Commission of Malaysia has facilitated and accompanied The Honourable (YB) Dato Sri John Sikie ak Tayai, Minister at the Premier’s Office and delegation for a working visit to Toronto from 6 to 11 July 2024. The main objective of the visit was to study the Indigenous court system and to explore community relations programmes in Canada.
YB Dato Sri John Sikie was accompanied by Deputy Ministers in the Premier’s Department of Sarawak namely YB Datuk Hajah Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, YB Datuk Gerawat Gala, YB Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat and Member of Sarawak Legislative Assembly, YB Kennedy Chukpai Ugon. The delegation also comprised senior officials from the Sarawak State Government, community elders representing the Iban and Bidayuh communities, and representatives from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
The delegation engaged with senior officials from the Ministry of Attorney General of Ontario (MAG), which include the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, the Crown Attorney for Toronto South, and the Manager of the Policy Division of MAG. The delegation toured the new Ontario Court of Justice, where they observed hearings in Gladue Court, gaining invaluable insights of the Indigenous court system.
The delegation had extensive discussions with the Manager of Partnership & Community Relations from the Indigenous Affairs Office of the City of Toronto, as well as the Chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and the Mohawk Council. They also visited the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto. These interactions provided valuable insights into Indigenous community relations and governance, significantly enhancing the delegation's knowledge and experience.
The meeting with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) marked a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of cascading power sources.
