At the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a three-day official visit to Malaysia from 4 - 6 October 2013. The visit envisaged to further enhance co-operation between Malaysia and Canada in the fields of security and military, finance-related matters and private sector engagements.
During the visit, Malaysia and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that would enhance security cooperation between the two countries and help addressed the threats of terrorism, human smuggling and organized crime in Southeast Asia. The MOU, laid the foundation for Malaysia and Canada to reinforce and expand their cooperation on countering international crime and terrorism. The two countries will work together to enhance training partnerships among security experts on threats and challenges in Southeast Asia including terrorism, human smuggling and organized crime.

Both Prime Ministers pledged to continue strengthening their bilateral ties in the areas of security, trade and investment during the press conference held at the end of the visit. The Prime Minister of Malaysia also announced Petronas investment worth $36 billion over 30 years period for developing liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in British Columbia. He remarked that it is the largest direct foreign investment in Canada by any country.
High level visits between Malaysia and Canada has further strengthened the long and close relationship between the two countries. The Governor General of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston visited Malaysia in his first State Visit abroad in November2011 and His Majesty The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, King of Malaysia visited Canada in September 2010.
