Worker-Controlled Technology for Human Rights Due Diligence in Supply Chains on the margins of the 12th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights

On 28 November 2023, the Permanent Missions of Malaysia and Australia to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, co-organised the side event on “Worker-Controlled Technology for Human Rights Due Diligence in Supply Chains” on the margins of the 12th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights.

The objective of this event is to share how companies are using technology to gather, validate and analyse data as part of their human rights due diligence (HRDD) of supply chain. Panellists highlighted the importance of utilising Direct Worker Voice as a bottom-up initiative in engaging workers outside of audits, which would be a powerful contribution to HRDD. Panellists briefed participants on the methodology and benefits of the technology that is practical, cost-effective and transparent, in assisting businesses to meet their obligations in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).

Malaysia delivered a closing remark, highlighting the government’s initiatives to address the wide range of issues relating to business and human rights namely the development of the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights as well as ratification to the ‘Protocol of 2014 to the Forced Labour Convention, 1930’ in March 2022.

Malaysia’s co-sponsorship to the side event demonstrated Malaysia’s strong commitment and constructive approach to engage with the UN, CSOs, workers’ union, business sector, and all relevant stakeholders with a view to improving the implementation of human rights principles and labour standards in business sectors in Malaysia.
