WORKING VISIT OF YAB DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND
MINISTER OF RURAL AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO SWITZERLAND
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EIGHTH SESSION OF
THE GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (8TH GPDRR)

YAB Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi led the Malaysian delegation to the Eighth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (8th GPDRR) in Geneva, Switzerland on 4-5 June 2025. YAB Deputy Prime Minister was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).
At the 8th GPDRR, YAB Deputy Prime Minister delivered Malaysia’s National Statement during the Ministerial Roundtable Session on the topic of ‘Safe Schools Now: Protecting Every Child from Disaster and Climate Risk’. Among others, YAB Deputy Prime Minister reiterated Malaysia’s continued commitment to disaster management through the launch of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy, the implementation of Safe School Programme and Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Programme, as well as through the introduction of a Disaster Risk Reduction education programme.
On the margins of the 8th GPDRR, YAB Deputy Prime met with the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction. The meeting provided the opportunity for Malaysia to consider potential collaboration on disaster risk management with the United Nations and other international partners.
Additionally, YAB Deputy Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and the Minister of Home Affairs of Brunei Darussalam. These meetings allowed for the exchange of views and best practices on regional cooperation in disaster preparedness and response, and reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ASEAN solidarity in building disaster-resilient communities.
The GPDRR is an important international platform to assess progress made by the UN Member States, including Malaysia, on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030. Malaysia is a pioneer member of this network and remains unwavering in its commitment to manage and pre-empt disasters in line with the 2030 National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy.
