Working Visit of YB Minister of Human Resources
to Geneva, Switzerland
Minister of Human Resources, YB V. Sivakumar undertook a working visit to Geneva on 12-15 June 2023, to lead the Malaysian delegation to the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC).
Against the theme Advancing Social Justice, the ILC discussed a wide array of issues such as a just transition in the field of employment in response to climate change, as well as policy recommendations on quality apprenticeship, occupational safety and health as basic rights at work. The ILC also reviewed the application of international labour standards, and the ILO programme and budget for the term 2024-2025.
Delivering a national statement at the ILC plenary session, YB Minister elucidated Malaysia’s various initiatives in achieving inclusive, adequate and effective labour protection for all workers in the country, particularly through the adoption of policies that are important to protect workers from economic shocks, inadequate working conditions and to secure their rights at workplace. These initiatives are being implemented in line with the amendments of Employment Act 1955 and Employers’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodation and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446). Furthermore, Malaysia is looking into the possibility of introducing a policy for a progressive wage system in the country.
Additionally, YB Minister attended the ASEAN Labour Ministers’ Meeting with Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mr. Gilbert Huongbo. He also participated in various meetings and programmes organised on the margins of the ILC. YB Minister took the opportunity to host a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Geneva, where he shared the government’s latest initiatives in relation to Malaysia Madani and socioeconomic development, among others.
