CHARGÉ D'AFFAIRES JOINED THE MALAYSIAN DELEGATE AT THE 11TH SCAR OPEN SCIENCE CONFERENCE IN PUCÓN, CHILE

From 19-23 August, the Chargé d'Affaires joined the Malaysian delegate at the 11th SCAR Open Science Conference in Pucón, Chile, alongside representatives from @YPASM14 and the National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC). Since joining SCAR in 2008, Malaysia has been committed to Antarctic research, recognizing the continent’s vital role in understanding and mitigating climate change. Antarctica’s melting ice and its impact on global sea levels have direct implications for Malaysia. To address these challenges, Malaysia established NARC in 2002 and YPASM in 2012, supporting over 50 research projects that contribute significantly to global scientific efforts. It was inspiring to witness Malaysia’s growing role in Antarctic research at @scarchile2024, where more than 2,000 scientists attended in person and over 3,000 participated online in this hybrid event. Dr. Wee Cheah presented on phytoplankton variability in the Southern Ocean, which plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration and marine biodiversity. Prof. Siti Aisyah Alias shared her research on soil microbial communities in Maritime Antarctica, providing valuable insights into how these ecosystems respond to environmental changes. Malaysia's commitment to Antarctic research not only contributes to global climate science but also plays a crucial role in informing coastal management and climate adaptation strategies at home. As a SCAR member, Malaysia continues to strive for greater involvement in the Antarctic Treaty System, working towards safeguarding our planet’s future by understanding and addressing the impacts of climate change.
