Malaysia Takes Part in the 2nd Asian-German Business Dialogue
The 2nd Asian-German Business Dialogue took place in Berlin on 29-30 March 2017. The Dialogue, initiated by MP Mark Hauptmann (CDU), aims to promote dialogue and closer economic cooperation between decision-makers and businesses from Asia and Germany. This year's Dialogue featured the Malaysian Investment Development AUthority (MIDA) as one of the event's key sponsors.
Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dr. Gerd Mueller was amongst high-level speaker at the event. In his keynote, Dr. Mueller stressed that companies operating in Asia should conduct trade fairly to ensure sustainability of the business. For example, workers should be paid fair wages, and they need to be given appropriate protection that commensurates their job risks.
A "Ministers Dialogue" session featured at this year's Dialogue. Taking part in the session were Mr. Luvsanvandan Bold, Former Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs of Mongolia; Ms. Apiradi Tantraporn, Minister of Commerce of Thailand; Mr. Arthur Tugade, Secretary for Transport and Technology of the Philippines; and Pehin Dato Muhammad Yasmin Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry of Brunei Darussalam. The seesion highlighted the economic opportunities presented in Asia as well as the intention on Asia's part to deepen economic relations with Germany.
There were also presentations from Asian and German companies, as well as panel discussion involving business representatives, during which said companies shared their observations on current trends and challenges faced throughout their dealings in Asia.
The second day of the event was held at the Paul-Loebe-Haus as a breakfast meeting. The meeting discussed a study conducted by Ernst & Young on ASEAN and how it has changed roughly a year after the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community.
