MERDEKA FAMILY DAY

On the occasion of Merdeka month, the Embassy has organised a Merdeka Family Day on Sunday, 2 August 2009 as one of its activities to celebrate 52nd Anniversary of Malaysia’s National Day. This programme is part of the activities of the Embassy under “Program Mendamping Rakyat Malaysia”.

The event was organised at Volkspark Potsdam which located about 30 kilometres away from Berlin

Roughly about 80 people among Malaysian community including students together with their family members from Berlin and surrounding cities attended the gathering.

The programme started at 10.45 a.m. with the singing of national anthem Negara-Ku and followed by short remarks by the Malaysian Ambassador. In his remarks, the Ambassador stated that the aim of the family day event, which was organised in conjunction with the month of independence, was to promote greater interactions among Malaysians. The Ambassador further stressed the importance of the Independence Day to be celebrated by every Malaysian citizen as it marks the beginning of the country’s journey to chart its own destiny after being colonialised by foreign power. This is especially important to the younger generation for them to appreciate the true meaning of independence.

After the speech, those present were later treated to a BBQ and other dishes prepared by members of PERWAKILAN. Some participants had also kindly contributed additional dishes.

The Embassy had also organised different kind of games for children to cheer up the event such as musical chair, filling water in bottle and looking for coin in flour. Similarly, adults were also invited to participate in games such as coke drinking, sepaktakraw juggling and golf putting.
